Leibniz, Gottfried Wilhelm

Leibniz, Gottfried Wilhelm
(1646–1716)
   Philosopher, Theologian and Ecumenist.
Leibniz was born in Leipzig, Germany, and was educated at the Universities of Leipzig and Jena. After ten years in the service of the Duke of Mainz, he was appointed librarian and historiographer of the Duke of Brunswick. Among his philosophical works was Monadology, in which he argued that the universe was composed of an in- finite series of simple substances which form a continuous ladder from the lowest to the highest. It is not clear whether he believed God was the highest of the monads or whether He was outside the system altogether. He also produced theological works such as Systema Theologicum and Essais de Théodicée. He was a correspondent of Bishop bossuet and was a believer in the possibility of Church reunion. He also produced a lengthy critique of John locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding. He accepted the validity of the classical proofs for the existence of God and he was convinced that the findings of reasons and the maxims of faith could be reconciled.
